10 Things that Declassified Files Say About Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Introduction

The clamour for the finding of the exact details of the life of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was happening since his disappearance. Initially, it was picked up the relatives of this great son of the soil, later by the friends and well wishers who know him quite well. These people did not believe in the official version of the sudden disappearance in late 1945. After a long hue and cry, the demand has finally found the political currency with the decision of West Bengal government to declassify 64 Netaji files in its possession. In this blog, we would be looking at the 10 points that these files come to share with the people.

netaji files

Points Shared by Declassified Files

declassifed file points

  1.  On September 18, 2015, the West Bengal government released abut 64 files under its possession. These files were hidden in its lockers for decades. These files could be accessed by anybody from September 21, 2015.
  2.  According to the statistics available with the RTI activists, there are about 130 more files available with the Central government. These are kept as classified files to keep them out of public purview. These files are expected to throw some light on the mystery of Netaji’s disappearance in 1945.
  3. Subhas Chandra Bose used to be called, "Netaji" by his followers. He was a Congress leader who became its President twice. Netaji quit the Congress before Independence due to his ideological differences with Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. He later launched an organised military resistance against the British. As a result of his efforts, he could form the Indian National Army.
  4. In 1940, Netaji was imprisoned in Kolkata for organizing mass protests. He sat on the hunger strike against his arrest by the British rulers. Hence, he was sent to his home in the city and put him under house arrest.
  5. In January 1941, he dramatically escaped from the house arrest despite the vigil by the guards posted around his house. At the time of his escape, he hid his face under the beard. After that, Netaji travelled to Peshawar, from where he further moved to Afghanistan, Russia and reached Germany in the end.
  6. Netaji is currently believed to have died due to a plane crash in Taiwan in 1945. It is believed that he had sustained a third degree burn injury due to the crash and died a few days later. Many of his family members did not believe this story.
  7. The declassified files reveal that the Netaji’s family members were under the surveillance of the Intelligence Bureau and other security agencies taking the order from the first Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru. Hence, this continued till Jawaharlal Nehru’s death.
  8. Citing surveillance by the security agencies, the Netajis family members say that Netaji was very much alive even after India’s independence. They further added that the Indian National Congress under Jawaharlal Nehru did not want him back in the country.
  9. According to one story, Netaji spent his later years in hiding as a Faizabad-based spiritual leader Gumnam Baba who died in the 1980s. Followers of this baba say that the seer had reading habits of Netaji and he knew a lot of Indian National Army.
  10. Some relatives of Netaji allege that the Congress suppressed files on Netaji to shield Jawaharlal Nehru so that he could become Prime Minister of independent India. Hence, the family requested the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to look into their demand for an investigation.

Should the Files Pertaining to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Need to be Declassified?

Introduction

There has been an aura of mystery in the sudden disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1945. The most followed story that tried to do away the sudden disappearance of this great patriot was that he died tragically in a plane crash in a place near Taiwan. But there are other stories that rubbish this claim away by saying that the Netaji was very much alive even after Indian independence. Moreover, the relatives of Netaji were snooped upon by the Indian government post independence for no fault of theirs. These details have been kept in some classified documents by the Indian government these many years, despite the demand for their declassification. For many years, the relatives of the patriot have been asking for the declassification of documents that tell about his last few years.

Snooping of Netaji Family

Immediately after the independence, the Jawaharlal Nehru-lead Indian National Congress government ordered the surveillance of the activities of the close relatives of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. No explanation was given on that. Most of the time the surveillance was non-intrusive and many letters and other forms of correspondence were intercepted and copied before handing them over to the family members. Since independence, the family members of this great patriot were crying foul on this type of behaviour of the security agencies. But nobody showed any interest in this issue. The declassification of the files on Netaji would embarrass the previous Congress governments that ruled the country for a long period of time under Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Dr. Manmohan Singh. That is the reason why the Indian National Congress tried to be guarded in its response on this issue. Most of the time, the party tried to distance itself from this by saying that its government never did anything like that to disgrace the service of this great son of Indian soil.  Even the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also chose to sit on this issue due to some strange and unknown reason, despite its election promise that truth about the life of Netaji would be brought to the public domain.

West Bengal Government Takes Lead

With election in West Bengal State Assembly is coming in the next year (2016), the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a decision on this matter and declassified about 64 files in the possession of the state government. She also openly challenged the central government to declassify the remaining files pertaining to Netaji in its possession and tell the truth about the true son of the soil. She knows that her state has high regard for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. She wants to enjoy the benefits of early bird on this matter. Undoubtedly, this would force the central government to take steps on the declassification of files and portray the Indian National Congress as well as its first family in poor light. If the leakage of certain portions of the documents is to be believed, the Gandhi family has to do some hard explaining to wriggle itself out of the situation. Otherwise, the Indian National Congress would not be able to open its account in that state for many years to come. Even Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would have to explain why its government at the centre has not declassified the documents. Let us see how the situation unfolds itself in the coming days.

Why Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was Darling of Youths?

Introduction

If anybody is asked about an inspiring leader nowadays, he or she promptly speak out the name of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. This is the reason why people of this country have fondly called him as the “People’s President”. Till his death, he was able to keep his popularity high through his unrelenting tours to meet the youths of the country. They seem to say “RIP Abdul Kalam”. Here, RIP does not stand for “Rest in Peace”, instead it stands for “Return If Possible”, indicating they wanted him to immediately come back to guide them to growth and prosperity.

Reason for His Popularity

No matter the age of the audience was Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was able to connect with them instantly. He could go to the any level to take their confidence before embarking on teaching them. This is how he even impressed the students in the primary school. His simplicity and unsophisticated approach helped him to endear with the audience. Moreover, he could talk on any subject extempore and impress the audience. This is the most striking quality of a teacher. No wonder, he loved teaching to the hilt. Once interacting with the students, a question was posed on him about his wish in his next birth. He told the students that he wanted to become a Primary School Teacher. Such was his down-to-earth approach and pleasing personality. Once during an interaction in a school, a Class 5 student had asked him about his hairstyle. He promptly shot back a counter question in a pleasing way: “Does it not suit me?” The instant responses like this made him quite popular among the members of the student community across the country.

Youth Icon

Dr Abdul Kalam was a darling with the young ones. He always walked into educational institutions receiving loud applause and cheers from the student community. This was testified by a correspondent of the Sree Niketan Group of Schools, Vishnucharan. He recalled a recent program where participants were asked to select from several famous personalities like MS Dhoni, Shiva Mani, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambir, etc. Most of the participants chose Dr Abdul Kalam for his simplicity and easy approachability. This fact showed that till his death, Dr Abdul Kalam was the rock star with the younger audience. Another incident also showed the same thing. During a recent visit to Sastra University in Thanjavur in April 2015, the former President of India spent hours on the campus interacting with the students about their research. One PhD scholar Janani Radhakrishnan from the nanotechnology lab in the University told that he spent hours in different labs till late night. During those visits, he also gave suggestions after going through their works. To the students, he looked like a man of infinite abilities.

6 Unknown Facts About the Ganges

Introduction

The civilization in our country came into being and flourished on the banks of the River Ganges. Since many cultural events took place near its bank, which includes the penning of three Vedas, the River Ganges is considered as the sacred river in our country. Incidentally, it is also the longest river in our country. This is the reason we can find amble mention of this river in last three Vedas – Yajur, Sama and Atharva. It also has stood as the economic lifeline and the elixir of life on the fertile plains of North India. The reverence of this simple-looking river can be traced to perception in the Indian minds that its waters have extraordinary healing powers. In this blog, we would be looking at the 6 little known or lesser known facts about the River Ganges.

river ganges

  • Antibacterial Nature:  The water from the River Ganges is perceived to be pure. Hence, it is used by the followers of Hindu religion during some rituals. Is there any substance to this perception materially?  The answer to this question was given by a British Bacteriologist Ernest Hanbury Hankin who did some test on water drawn from the River Ganges. He found that the virulent form of bacteria Vibrio Cholerae could thrive in the Ganges water for only three hours. The same bacteria could thrive for many hours even in distilled water.

    antibacterial

  • Antiputrification Property:  Normally river waters tend to putrefy due to the explosive growth of anaerobic bacteria when there is insufficient supply of pure oxygen. The dirtiest of waters from the Ganges are found to remain fresh even after hours of storage without undergoing a putrification process.

    antiputrification

  • High Oxygen Content:  The River Ganges is able to reduce its biochemical oxygen content much faster than other Indian rivers. This truth is testified by an Indian Environmental Engineer D.S. Bhargava.  He suggests that an unknown substance dissolved in the Ganges waters prevents putrification of organic material and kills the bacteria present in it.

  • Ganges Fans:  The holy river forms largest of underwater geological structures due to the large scale sedimentation from river. These are called as submarine fans. The one formed by the River Ganges forms the largest submarine fan on earth. The fan is said to completely cover the Bay of Bengal. It has traveled through the underwater canyons preserves the dead organisms to form huge deposits of hydrocarbons.

  • The Ganges Experiences Water Shortages: In the current world, the India’s largest river is experiencing severe water shortage. Around Kashi, the average river depth used to be 60 metres. At some places, it has come down to just 10 metres. There are several reasons contributing to this alarming situation. One reason could be the fast receding of the Gangotri glacier. Other reasons could be the poor water management, over population and dumping of industrial waste and severages mixing with river water.

    water shortage

  • Size of River Ganges: Its size is difficult to ascertain the sheer size of the Ganges. Its river system is very complicated, especially when we consider its deltas. It has complex tributaries and a number of bifurcations in the Bengal plains, making it highly difficult to judge the length of the river.

More Blatant Cases of Food Adulteration Reported

Introduction

The food quality ombudsman of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Food and Drug Administration (UP FDA) is reported to have found detergent in one of the samples drawn from Mother Diary’s milk packets. However, the company, which is in the dock, has sought to contest this claim that has come in a section of the media. After this expose, the Delhi-based brand has gone on record categorically denying the adulteration milk distributed in pouches.

Another Case of Food Adulteration

If the media reports coming out of a section of the media have to be believed, the UP FDA has found detergent in the one of the two samples of milk produced and packaged by Mother Diary, which is one of the reputed brands in North India providing milk to a large section of people. This was shared to the media by one Ram Naresh Yadav, who is an official working with the UP FDA in Agra.  While sharing the test results with the media, he showed the facts come out of the results show the milk provided by the reputed brand was of substandard quality.

Test Results on Samples

On getting certain complaints from the customers, the UP FDA visited the Mother Diary’s milk collection centres in Bah and picked up some random samples for ascertaining their quality in November 2014. The drawn samples were first sent to Lucknow-based laboratory for finding the presence of detergent in them. The results were inconclusive. Hence, the same samples were later sent to a more equipped Kolkata –based laboratory for the detailed testing.  This information was shared by the UP FDA official work in its Agra branch. Moreover, the results from the Lucknow laboratory were contested by the company, necessitating the detailed analysis by an independent laboratory.

Mother Diary’s Response

Mother Diary chose to dismiss the claim by the UP state through its public relations exercise. Its head of Milk, Fruits and Vegetables sought to confront the claim by UP FDA by stating that the products from the company undergo four levels of thorough testing at various levels. He further added that the quality check is enforced by the company at input, processing, dispatches and market levels to ensure the edibility of the products. Apart from these, the milk reaching the company premises is subjected to a series of 23 stringent quality checks to note down anomalies or contamination in the sample, if any, he quipped. On the basis of these tests, the contaminated milk is filtered from the supply line without any further notice, he claimed.  He assured the media that these stringent quality tests undertaken at the company premises are designed to find the adulteration of milk with water, oil, urea, detergent, etc. In short, the company spokesperson claimed that it follows 100% testing protocol to remain fool proof.

Why Water Table in Our Cities is Going Down Rapidly?

Introduction

In the olden days, water used to be available in plenty with rivers and other water bodies filled up to the brim. Hence, the water availability in wells could be found not that deep. The scenario is slowly changing. It has now worsened to such a level that water cannot be found even after digging a number of feet down.  This change in water availability to water scarcity is going to create rift between the water-surplus and water-scarce areas in our country. The difference in water availability might even fuel unscrupulous exploitation of water for commercial purpose. This is what happening in cities like Hyderabad and Chennai where the water table is fast depleting and water replenishment is happening less frequently. This might even create fights between water surplus and water scarce areas in the near future. Hence, let us identify the reasons and do the amendments to prevent the problems from going out of hands.

water shortage

Factors Attributing to Water Scarcity

There are various factors that attribute to the scarcity of water in a given locality. Some of them are man-made whereas some others naturally exist. We cannot do anything on the natural ones. But we can take some precautions to that effect so that things can be better managed. We have been celebrating World Water Day instituted by the UN body. Yet, we have not properly understood the meaning of the observation of that day. In this blog, we look at some of the factors that contribute to the water scarcity.

water scarcity

  • Climate Change: The major factor that contributes to the water woes facing a number of cities in our country is the change in the weather pattern. As a result, water from rains has come down.

    climate change

  •  Deforestation: The plants and trees are necessary for the cooling of clouds and precipitation of water droplets. The humus created by the falling leaves around the trees and plants can retain water and prevent the loss of water. Despite this knowledge, we have been mercilessly downing the trees in the name of development.  The forest and areas under agricultural cover are slowly giving rise to the high-rise building. So, water has no place to go.

    deforestation

  • No Natural Faults: Even if it rains, the water is not getting stored anywhere unless and until there are natural faults under the ground to let the water percolate the rocks to reach the underground water table. Unfortunately, many cities in our country don’t have such naturally occurring faults to help the water reach the ground water storage underneath the ground.

    natural faults

  •   No Rainwater Harvesting: Some cities, especially Chennai, have made it a norm to give approval for the new buildings only when they include the provision for rainwater harvesting. Unfortunately, other cities in our country have never thought of this solution. This has lead to the loss of precious water after rains to the canals that are rarely maintained.

    rain water harvesting

  •  Overexploitation: The water-scarce cities like Hyderabad and Chennai have given rise to a new form of business. This is called water tanker business. This business thrives heavily on the overexploitation of water resources from nearby villages. Over the period of a few months, the water table of the exploited area comes down drastically. However, the tanker water mafia would go in search of new avenues and continue their businesses.

    water over exploitation

  • Uncontrolled and Unplanned Real Estate Growth: Due to uncontrolled growth in the construction businesses, the need for new wells has come into existence. If more wells are dug in the same locality, the water level in the existing wells goes down and they dry up quite easily during the summer season. This in turn has spurred the growth of tanker water businesses in many cities.

    real estate growth

  • Contamination of Existing Water Sources: Due to the rapid industrialization, the water table underneath the ground is slowly getting polluted, creating a demand for more water from other sources. In turn, this has given rise to the need for more wells elsewhere to keep up with the growing water demand.

    ground water contamination

  •  Other Forms of Exploitation: People tend to use precious water for cleaning their vehicles, watering plants and even washing the house.  Doing these kind of activities take more water than what we think.

Is Food Adulteration so Rampant in India?

Introduction

Recently, a testing centre in our country came out with damning evidence about the presence of monosodium glutamate in large amounts and lead beyond permissible limit in the fast food samples made by Nestle, a multinational company from Switzerland. As soon as the evidence became available in the public domain, different states in our country began testing for these chemicals in the samples pooled from their respective territories. Many have reported the adulteration whereas some other states reported negative in samples. This has led to the countrywide ban on the food items produced by the Nestle Company in India. In this scenario, should we include the testing of other food available in the Hotel Industry where the hotels are vying each other to make tasty food for the customers.

msg

Reason for Such Widespread Ban

The studies in the past have indicated that lead cannot be included in the food items as it might hamper some of the metabolic activities in the body, leading to many complications, including multi-organ failures. On the other hand, the presence of monosodium glutamate (MSG) beyond permissible limit leads to some complications in the nervous system. In some people, it has shown up as Chinese restaurant syndrome. In this condition, people usually experience anything in between heart palpitation and numbness. These side-effects are generally temporary. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has renamed it as MSG Syndrome Complex. The neurosurgeons say that in large amounts the monosodium glutamate causes over excitation of neural cells. Most often the over excitation causes irreversible damages to the cells or their death. This is the reason why the sachets of this compound contain a statutory warning. This salt should not be used by infants and expectant mothers.

ajino moto

Rampant Use of this Chemical (MSG)

The monosodium glutamate acts as a flavour enhancer and food additive that improves the shelf life of food items. Hence, it is permitted to use MSG in fast food and other food items to increase its taste in small amounts. But in the era of cut-throat competition, hotels are liberally making use of this salt to enhance the taste. The legally permissible amount is 120 milligram per kilogram of human body weight. Nobody seems to have any care for this ratio. People want to earn some quick money by providing tasty and fresh food with a required aroma to entice the human taste buds.

food additive msg

Overdose of MSG in Food

In a recent interview, the country cooks in the hotels of Kerala confided in private that MSG is liberally added in every food item that is being sold in the country.  It does not matter whether you eat chicken biriyani or taste some sambar-chutney in a hotel. You can taste MSG in every food item ordered across the counter in a hotel. So, are we eating toxic and unsafe food items from eateries across our streets? Unfortunately, the answer seems to be yes. Even at homes, some people use this chemical to bring freshness and taste. Hence, it is quite easily available in all provision shops. Another catch here is that the hotels some time re-circulate used food after mixing with this chemical to make it taste and smell like a freshly made one.

A Good Samaritan Saves the Life of a 7-year-old Girl

Introduction

The 7-year-old Priya Shah is a bright student in her schools and teachers were looking forward to her passing out from school with flying colours. However, the wings of hope to succeed in life got clamped by the diagnosis of a rare disease condition called Thalassemia. Her failing health forced her to remain in bed and drop out from school. The doctors diagnosed that the young Priya is waging a losing battle unless she goes for stem cell transplantation. Despite the will of her family members to donate their stem cells to her, none of them could come to her rescue as their stem cells did not match hers.  Suddenly a man from a far off land came to her rescue with his stem cells. He is not known to her at all.

Good Samaritan Descends as Knight

The story of a bright student waging a losing war on Thalassemia was posted on the net after the doctors treating her could not find a suitable match for the donation of stem cells from her family. In the meanwhile, they thoroughly scanned the database of donors to find a suitable match for her blood group. The story of the 7-year-old Priya Shah was read by a Good Samaritan working in Dubai. His name is Gopal Vachhani from Ahmadabad. This stranger has become this young girl’s knight in shining armour. He took pains to come down to India to provide the stem cells for allogeneic-matched unrelated donor transplant. The family of Priya thinks that Mr. Vachchani is a God-sent messenger for her and he has brought her back to life from the jaws of death. However, the donor Vachhani is yet to meet Priya as there is a rule disallowing their meeting for at least a year. Despite of this, their bonds of friendship through stem cells has already been forged.

good samartan

What Makes this Gesture Stand Apart?

The doctors who treated young Priya have confided that a donor rarely goes to a large extent to honour his commitment. They added that most of the time the matched and registered prospective donors back out in the last minute, leaving the critically ill patients to fend for themselves. This guy working in the Gulf took pains to come down to India so that he could donate the stem cells from his bone marrow to her ailing body in time. On making contact, the Gopal Vacchani expressed his desire to do the noble job. He said that he wanted to save a life from getting snuffed out very early in life.

DATRI Stem Cell Donor Registry

This donor-recipient interaction is facilitated by DATRI Stem Cell Donor Registry, which keeps a comprehensive database for such cases. The organization claims that it has completed the 100th unrelated blood stem cell donation so far. Its co-founder Raghu Rajagopal says that our country has just 1 lakh stem cell donors registered. Globally, this number is very high and it stands at 20 million at present. At present, there is a long queue for donors in India. In reality, the organization is trying to find a donor for over 1000 patients.
